September 23 Autumn Equinox

September 23 Autumn Equinox

September 23 and today at 4:21 am is the official Autumn Equinox for 2015, and my daughter’s 18th birthday!  The equinox happens two times a year in the spring and in the fall, when the day and night are equal in length.  From now until the Winter Solstice, the days will be getting shorter as the nights get longer. The official equinox time is the moment when the sun passes over an imaginary line in the equator called the celestial equator, which signifies that day and night are the same length.  It doesn’t usually fall on my daughter’s birthday. So in honor of my beloved daughter ,who is my tough, jump up with enthusiasm even as you just pushed yourself up from the floor kind of woman, we will do a tabata of burpees. You can substitute a tabata of russian kettlebell swings if you want. The website greatist.com has a great discussion on burpees and how to do a proper one, here is there breakdown of the six basic moves of the burpee: “1. Bend over or squat down and place your hands on the floor in front of you, just outside of your feet. 2. Jump both feet back so that you’re now in plank position. 3. Drop to a push-up—your chest should touch the floor. You can also drop to your knees here, which makes the impending push-up easier. 4. Push up to return to plank position (this can be a strict push-up, a push-up from the knees, or not a push-up at all (i.e., just push yourself up from the ground as you would if you weren’t working out)—your choice). 5. Jump the feet back in toward the hands. 6. Explosively jump into the air, reaching your arms straight overhead.”  Modify  the burpee as you need, but do as much of the burpee as you can, and do as many as you can in 20 seconds (don’t be upset if it is only 3, it is a complex move), then rest for 10 seconds: that is one set. Do 8 sets total for 4 minutes.  The Equinox is a moment of balance between day and night, it is offers us a great opportunity to meditate on balance in our own lives. Where do we feel we have balance? Where do we crave more balance? How is your dynamic balance, your ability to kept balance as you move? Again the answers are personal and different for everyone and there are no right or wrong answers. Balance, both physical, emotional, and even mental, is key to creating a healthy and thriving life.  For our self care today let’s look for ways to increase balance in our lives and implement at least one strategy for increasing balance into our day.
