October 21 Maintaining Your Good Habits

October 21 Maintaining Your Good Habits

Maintaining your good habits can be very similar to trying to keep a fire burning.  It is one thing to start a fire and a whole other thing to keep a fire going. Maintaining a fire takes a lot of awareness, focus, intention, and work.  Yet we want to keep practicing with our healthy habits till the maintaining of them is second nature; like your friend at the party who knows it is time for them to go home because the wood stove is calling to them.   I am a fan of small, completely do-able, and very sustainable healthy habits. Ones that build on each other. My writing this daily blog has been an effort to create the daily habit of a workout 6 days a week: and to share with others how easy it can be to make significant changes in your strength, endurance, and flexibility with very short time investment. I want to share how functional strengthening whole body movements done in high interval training methods can yield wonderful results in improved health, energy and mood. So one of my favorites for today, a tabata of planks, for each set hold the plank for 20 seconds, then rest 10 seconds, do 8 sets total= 4 minutes.  You can hold your favorite plank pose for each set or you can mix it up and do a different plank variation for each set.  Possible variations are 1)top of push up TOPP, 2)front of elbow FOE, 3) right side plank, 4) left side plank, 5)TOPP or FOE with right arm up, 6) TOPP or FOE with left arm up, 7) TOPP or FOE with right foot up, 8) TOPP or FOE with left foot up.   Remember to think about long tubular strength and using your whole body front and back to hold your straight as a plank. Kettlebell  folks can substitute a tabata of Russian Swings and then do a 30 second plank. For today’s self care activity, let’s  first give our self some acknowledgment for the healthy habits we each have been maintaining, and then for each habit we are maintaining think of one way our life is better because of this good habit.  We want to reinforce our chosen new way of being and show our selves some gratitude for the ways we are investing in our health and happiness.  You are rocking it!
