Today’s exquisite self care for me was centered on food. I love the ritual of going to the farmer’s market and buying fresh, local, organic and nourishing food! The market was cold and the air felt heavy and wet. By the time I got there the vendors were all but frozen yet they smiled big. I love letting the food call out to me in its vibrant beauty. I never know what I am getting, instead I like to see what looks the best or the most appealing. I sampled the cheese at the Amish stand and bought both curds and cheddar. Then I got some lovely eggs of all colors. Chard, spinach, mixed baby greens, onions, honey, beets, mushrooms, honey, and strawberries all got my attention. I also bought some basil lime soap that is locally made. It smelled amazing! A local herbalist, nurse, and healer, Grace McNeil makes the soap. I just love supporting the beautiful people of our community and getting the highest quality food and products available. It is a total win- win situation. I indulged in an almond croissant from Muddy Forks bakery where they told me they even made the butter that went into the croissants. Wow are those a rich, delicious delight! Now this may sound silly but I truly believe that the homemade, high quality croissant was better for me than a store bought standard croissant. A croissant may not be the healthiest choice for me, but because of the quality, I don’t regret it at all. It nourished me in more ways than one. For one thing, this croissant was like a piece of heaven so my pleasure was heightened. Studies have shown that when you enjoy how the food tastes your body digests it better, meaning you get more nutrients or actual nourishment from the food. Eating well should be a total pleasure! Eating well should nourish our bodies, our mind, and our spirits. I truly believe whatever food you eat, the key to being healthy is to eat the highest quality of that kind of food as possible. When you can have a pleasurable experience buying the food, that just adds to the good juju. So on Day 14 of our self care challenge, I encourage you to look for ways to care for yourself by nourishing yourself with high quality and yummy food!
