“If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t have a gift worth giving.” Joe DeCroes, 1996
No matter what your political ideas or leanings, most everyone seems to be experiencing incredibly high levels of stress. The rise of hate speech and hurtful actions towards the most vulnerable of our community is feeding all of our worst fears. I look around and see my friends and myself struggling to stay positive and hopeful. In a society that is questioning our worth and value, to take excellent care of ourselves, is an act of rebellion and resistance. This is not my brilliant idea, many others have articulated it more eloquently and clearly. It is an idea whose time has come! To have the energy to manifest a community of love and caring, we must start with our own precious selves. Remember the safety talk on the plane, we must put on our own oxygen mask on before we try to help others get their mask on. So let’s all add some daily radical self care to our lives. I am starting today with a kettlebell workout with my neighbor and dear friend, a delicious protein shake, and some time to take a luxurious bath as my form of radical self care. What is your favorite form of self care? What makes you feel alive and in your body? What makes you sing? What makes the struggle feel like a form of play? Let’s cheer each other on and share the love! Tell me, what you are doing for your beautiful self today?
